From your Accident Prevention State Chairman

At the recent Grand Lodge Insurance Seminar, each State Chairman was given a list of Lodges in his/her State that were “Underinsured”.  These Lodges for our State of Massachusetts totaled 28 that were listed as insured less than 80% to the actual replacement cost of the Lodge.  16 of those Lodges are less than 50% insured to replacement cost and one Lodge is at 9%.  Anything less than 80% should be considered unacceptable and anything less than 50% indicates that the Lodge Trustees (or governing body) are not doing their job.

This same report also indicated that we have 3 Lodges that have NO coverage for certain buildings on their property.

I urge all Lodge Exalted Rulers, Trustees and Secretaries to examine their current Grand Lodge Property Plus Insurance Policy.  If it appears you are “underinsured” to rebuilding costs or if you have not utilized the “Free” Replacement Cost Estimate from our Grand Lodge in the last 5 years, I strongly suggest you contact our Grand Lodge Insurer immediately (AON at 1-800-421-3557).  Although AON is the place you ultimately need to contact, I remain available to anyone who might have a question.  My phone numbers and e-mail are listed in the State Book.  Do not hesitate to contact me if you should have a question.

An added note and also of great importance is the fact that the report indicates we have 19 Lodges in our State without Directors and Officers Liability Insurance.  Officers and Committee Chairpersons of the Lodge leave their homes and other personal assets in jeopardy if the Lodge does not have this very important coverage.  You have heard me say on many occasions, I would not be an Officer or Committee person in a Lodge that did not have Directors and Officers Liability Insurance”.  Please don’t tell me you cannot afford it.  The truth is that, You Cannot Afford Not To Have It .

Lawrence Quaglia,

State Chairman Accident Prevention Committee

Massachusetts State Elks Bulletin Contest

Lodge Bulletins should serve as a vital link of communication in keeping your members informed and active. Lodge Programs and activates are an important step to encourage the members to participate and stay involved. The bulletin should contain timely information from the Officers and Committees of the Lodge with the use of pictures of various events.

The Bulletin should

Be easily readable, organized and informative.

Report news items of the Lodge, District, State and National levels. With emphasis on any recognition received from civic or community projects involving your Lodge.

Use of photographs to illustrate a news item that is reported.

Include articles written for and directed to all members, not just VIP’S.

Please make sure that the following District Editors are on your mailing list to receive your lodge bulletin, as they will be judging at the district level.  All district winners will be given to the Mass. State Lodge activities committee for judging at the state level.

MA Elks Day At Suffork Downs Has Been Canceled

State Chairman for Elks Day at Suffork Downs Frank Staffier has informed me that he has received notice that Suffork Downs has canceled all activities at their facility until sometime in June 2010, due to their anticipation of remodeling of their facility in anticipation of the legalization of Slot Machines and a possible Casino there.  So our MA Elks Day at Suffork Downs scheduled for May 22, 2010 has been canceled until sometime after they re-open.
