Today is: National Macaroon Day in the United States
Today in 1884 - Dr. John Harvey Kellogg applies for a patent for “flaked cereal” (he is trying to improve the vegetarian diet of his hospital patients by finding a digestible bread-substitute created by boiling wheat, then pressing and baking it, but it is his brother, William Keith Kellogg, that made “Kellogg's” a household cereal name by forming the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Co in 1906)

Passing of Edwin F. Rogers, Jr. Past District Deputy Brookline Lodge #886
 
 
It is my sad duty to report on the passing of Brookline Lodge #886 Past District Deputy Edwin F. Rogers, Jr., on Saturday May 30, 2009. He was the devoted father of Brookline Lodge #886 Past District Deputy Edwin F. Rogers III and his wife Jana of Westwood, and Lynne A. and her husband Michael P. McDonough, of West Roxbury, brother of Joan A. Di Beneditti of Falmouth and John J. Rogers of West Roxbury. Grandfather of Edwin F. Rogers IV, Seamus and Rory McDonough. Also survived by niece Christine Di Sangro.
 
Funeral will be  held from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home 2055 Centre St. WEST ROXBURY, Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 9:45 AM. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Brookline at 11:00 AM.  Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
 
 Visiting hours will be Tuesday June 2, 2009 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM & 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Relatives and friends invited.  Contact Brookline Lodge for any other information.
 
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to Elks National Foundation, c/o 40 Kent St. Brookline, Ma. 02445.
 

Reminder - MA Elks Family Picnic Committee Meeting
 

There will be a meeting of the family picnic committee on Monday June 1, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Hudson Lodge of Elks.

Please try and make it, it is very important we meet to go over the events that will be happening that day and to make sure everyone knows what they will be doing.

Update on Charles J Crafts, Past Grand Lodge Chairman
 

I have been informed that Charles J. Crafts, PER, PDD, PSP, Past Grand Lodge Chairman of Ritualistic Excellence from the Saugus-Everett Lodge #642 is now a resident at the Chelsea Soldiers Home, Quigley Building, 4th Floor East, 91 Crest Avenue, Chelsea, MA 02150

 

I'm sure Charlie would love to see some familiar faces and/or receive cards.

Passing of Betty Kelley, wife of Auburn/Webster Lodge #2118 PDD Fred Kelley, Jr.
 
Betty N. (Moyer) Kelley, wife of Auburn/Webster Lodge Past District Deputy Fred Kelley, Jr and mother of Auburn/Webster Past District Deputy Fred Kelley, III (deceased) from the Auburn/Webster Lodge passed away on Thursday May 28, 2009 at  Radius Healthcare of Worcester.

She leaves her husband of 63 years, Frederick R. Kelley, Jr.; two daughters, Maura K. Vantre of Worcester and Elizabeth M. Hazelhurst of Sydney, Nova Scotia; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She also leaves a brother, Earl A. Moyer of Little River, SC and two sisters, Jane Donovan of Port St. Lucie, FL and Anne Isenburg of Little River, SC.. A son, Frederick R. Kelley, III predeceased her in 2006.

She was a past member and officer of the Auburn Emblem Club, a past member of the St. George's Women's Guild and she enjoyed reading and traveling.

The funeral will be held on Monday June 1, 2009  from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park.
Visiting hours are Sunday May 31, 2009  from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
