Son of Worcester Elks Member Honored by Red Sox

At the recent Elks Night at Fenway on August 28, 2009, the son of Worcester Elks member, Paul Gunnerson, Sr. was honored both by the members of the Worcester Lodge #243 and by the Red Sox staff at Fenway.

Sgt. 1st Class Paul Gunnerson Jr. has completed four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and is soon to return for a 5th. Paul Turner, PER, organizer of the Worcester trip to Fenway, presented Sgt. Gunnerson with a plaque in gratitude for his service to our country on behalf of the Worcester Lodge. Sgt. Gunnerson received a standing ovation from the 100 members and guests traveling to Fenway for the game that night from the Worcester Lodge.

Once at Fenway Sgt. Gunnerson along with his family, including his son Mitchell on his first trip to Fenway, were given great seats behind home plate in the EMC box section. Mitch got an autographed ball from "Big Papi" and Paul Jr. was given a signed and personalized ball from pitcher Tim Wakefield, who normally does not sign balls, but is very big on veterans. Also hats and shirts from the Red Sox Foundation were given.

Worcester Lodge also donated two tickets to the recent Red Sox game at Elks Night at Fenway to their local Boys/Girls Club. A member of the staff, Ian Witt, plus one of the members of the Worcester Boys/Girls Club, Shivani Kumar, were treated to a night at the Red Sox including the bus trip to the game and a box lunch at the Lodge before the game. The Worcester Lodge has worked with the Boys/Girls Club in the past, serving meals through their Kids Cafe program to needy boys and girls.

Winthrop Lodge #1078 Takes Veterans on Boat Cruise

Recently, The Winthrop Lodge of Elks shared a great day with the Veterans from the Chelsea Soldiers Home. A bus arrived at the Winthrop Publis Boat Landing only to find we were taking a cruise around Boston Harbor on a converted WW II U.S. Naval vessel. Future Elk Members Kathy and Tim Gover donated their boat and crew which really surprised the Veterans. The Massport fire boat, Mass. State Police patrol boat and fellow Elks were our escorts. This was followed by music, food, bingo, scratch tickets and great conversation back at the Lodge.

MA Elks At Pawtucket Red Sox

Once again this year, we had a sell out for the MA Elks at PawSox Game.  A great time was had by all, even if the home team lost, it was a picture perfect day to see a ball game.
