On Thursday April 28, 2009  the Acting Surgeon General, RADM Steve Galson, shared the message below with members of the Medical Reserve Corps. He made statement that I think is appropriate to the Elks because we are an organization that meets in large group settings. RADM Galson asked the Citizen Medical Reserve Corps  to “Encourage organizers in your community to announce the following principles at gatherings:

There are precautions consumers can take to help prevent the spread of germs that cause influenza. If you feel sick, stay home from work or school and limit your contact with others. Call your doctor to talk about your symptoms.

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water often.

  2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

  4. Avoid close contact with others who may be sick.

These are simple instructions that should be given with the other safety messages we give at gatherings including where appropriate fire exits are.
